A circle graph is used to __________.
Hey! Are you craving some pie? Here you are! Leon! Now you took a very large piece.
That was more than three quarters of the pie. And Philip, you took almost all the pie that was left. Now Kim and Maria have to share this little piece. This didn’t turn out especially fair. Here is the pie, cut into pieces, seen from above.
Leon took 78% of the pie. Philip took 21%, and then there was only 1% left for Maria and Kim to share. You can show other information like this as well — as if it were: pieces, of a pie. For example, the composition of air, can be shown as pie pieces, in a graph. We start by drawing a circle.
This, blue part of the circle shows how much of the air is nitrogen. It is 78%. This red part of the circle, shows oxygen. It makes up 21% of the air. Now there is only a small part of the air, and the circle, 1%.
1% of the air is, argon, carbon dioxide, and other gases. All these parts together, form the whole circle, and the air we breathe. Does the graph remind you of the pie? This kind of graph is called, a pie chart, or circle graph. Circle graphs, show the size of different parts that make up a whole - the portions that form a pie, for example, or the components that make up air.
Here is another example. This is a table, and a circle graph showing the favourite ice cream flavours among Leon’s friends. The smallest part of the graph is red, and the largest is green. So, what colour in the graph represents strawberry? If you answered red, you are absolutely right.
The red part of the graph is the smallest, and it shows the least liked flavour — strawberry. Which segment of the graph, shows those who like pear? Green. That part is a little bigger than the white segment - the white segment must be vanilla then, which six people like best. Leon likes pie a lot, anyway.
That's why he took such a big piece. But to make it fair, you should divide the pie in some other way. Now, the pie is divided into four, equal, parts. Everybody gets 25% of the pie chart. I mean, the pie.
