A bag of candy contains 100 candies. 20 of them are yours. You are given 5 more of the candies. By how many percentage points does the number of candies that you have increase?
And now the domestic news. Yesterday's opinion poll showed that voters' support for the Blue Party has increased from 50 to 52%. We invited Lena, our expert on percentages, into our studio. Welcome, Lena. Why did the support increase by 2%?
4, 2-- the support increased by 4%. 52 minus 50 is 2. I'm sure of that. Support for the Blue Party increased by two percentage points. Look here.
This jug can hold 100 centiliters. It's half full with water. That's 50 centiliters. Now I add two centiliters more. By what percent did the amount of water increase?
2. -No, a percent is the part divided by the whole. 2 divided by 50, that's 4 hundreths. The volume increased by 4%, because when we say something has increased or decreased, we normally compare it with the original amount. But when you talk about for votes for a party, you don't compare the original number of voters. You compare it with all voters.
So if we zoom out and compare with the jug instead, it looks like this. 50% of the jug was filled, then we added 2 more centiliiters so that 52% of the jug was filled. So we can say that the amount of water increased by two percentage points. This way it's clear that we're not comparing with the original amount, but with something else - the full jug in this case. Support for the Blue Party has increased by two percentage points, or 2% of all voters.
Exactly, because when we talk about opinion polls, we don't compare with previous values, but with all voters. Now, the control room is telling me that the support for the Blue Party today has shrunk back to the same level as previously. The Blue Party has therefore gone back two percentage points, or 4%. 3, 85. Wasn't 2 percentage points equal to 4%?
2 out of 50 is 4%. 2 out of 52 is 3,85%. The part is the same, but the whole is different so the share is different. That's the advantage with percentage points - the whole doesn't change. Let's turn to our weatherman Steve and ask, what's tomorrow's weather going to be?
